MOLISE was until the 1960?s part of the region called at the time ?Abruzzi e Molise?. Then it became a separate region, and a decade later another province, Isernia, was created, including roughly the municipalities in the west of the region, so all the places in the region of Molise were formerly in the province of Campobasso. The first historical mention of the Pizzone town is the center as ?Piczotum? in the ?Chronicon Volturnense? of the 12th century. The origin of Pizzone is linked to the colonisation made by the nearby Abbey of S. Vincenzo al Volturno, owning the territory. It seems that the monks had moved in the 10th centuries peasants from Marsica to the area and these latter had built villages called Iannini, Roccasecca, Cerquacupa and Viscurri. Under the Anjou it was a fiefdom of Andrea d?Isernia and in 1320 Pizzone was united to Abruzzo Citra (presently Province of Chieti). It was for long time a feud of the Pandone family, Count of Venafro (XV-XVI century). It was dominated by the De Bucchis and Marchesano families, passing later under the domination of Domenico Cestari (1777) and Pietro Battiloro. The economy was based on the territory, made of pastures and forests, therefore for centuries the main resources were timber and firewood and livestock, especially cows. Pizzone belongs to the Parco Nazionale d?Abruzzo since 1929, and Vallefiorita, a plateau at 1400 meters above sea level surrounded by centuries-old forests, as well as the Meta mountains and the dolomite-like Mainarde peaks attract more tourists every year.We advise you to visit the Parish Church of S. Nicolas , founded in the year 1318, of clear moulds of the sixteenth century, with the cusp belltower . The church has fives altars:S. Anthony, the Rosario (rosary), S. Rocco, the Carmine, and the Main Altar. By entering the village, we find the chapel of S. Liberata, and at 500 m from the inhabited area we find the ancient long fountain. We mention here few local feasts, like: Mostra delle zampogne (bagpipes exibition), (last Sunday of July) performed in the near Scapoli, with the attendence of bagpipes players coming from all Europa. Rodeo Pentro, (on Sunday following the 15th August) at Montenero Valcocchiara: a series of races and breakings of wild horses mounted without saddles are programmed. Feast of the mountain, (1st Sunday of August) on the plain of Valle Fiorita (blossoming valley) with sport competitions and performances of folk groups. Patron Feast: S. Rocco, (6 Decembre). Conpatron Feast: S. Liberata, (10 June). Exhibition, (9/10 June) together with the Patron Feast.
