"I have agreed with Mr Woodhouse, at Marsala, for 500 pipes of wine (...) the wine is so good that any gentleman's table might receive it, and it will be of real use to our seamen"
[Admiral Nelson's letter to his Commander-in-chief, Lord Keith, 20th March 1800]
This handsome structure was built by British trader John Woodhouse. He first visited Marsala in 1773, soon finding out about its quality sweet wine. His first shipment to Liverpool consisted of an 8,000 gallon-cargo, thus marking the beginnings of the history of Marsala wine.
In 1796 he built this semi-palladian baglio, within a 15 Ha plot, surrounded by vineyards and olive groves, gardens, poultry runs, kennels and even a cemetery. The baglio would serve as an architectural model for those to follow by Ingham, Hopps, Florio, Whitaker, Pellegrino.
Baglio Woodhouse is situated on a low rise looking out over the sea towards
Stagnone Lagoon and its islets (Santa Maria, Mozia, Isola Lunga, Schola). Further west is the Egadi archipelago (Levanzo, Favignana, Marettimo). From North to South, one dominates most of the Province's shore with breathtaking views of Mount Cofano, Mount Erice, Trapani, Marsala, and Mazara.
Set in the world's second most extensive wine-region, the property consists of:
A) the two-level landlord's residence, with 11 rooms per level (500 sq m)
B) the warehouses surrounding the internal courtyard (800 sq m)
The entrance to the property is marked by a monumental portal, built in the local yellow sandstone as is the rest of the buildings.
The sea is only 5 km away.
