Campania is a region celebrated for its climate, the fertility of the lands and the astonishingly beautiful landscapes. The territory is mostly gentle hills, apart from the Matese mountains bordering Molise and the rugged Irpinia area. The Vesuvius on the Gulf of Naples is one of the very few still active volcanoes in Europe. The two beautiful gulfs of Naples and Salerno with the Amalfi coast, separated by the Sorrento peninsula, are world famous for the high cliffs, sandy bays, grottoes and islands (Ischia, Procida, Capri), each view an enchanting postcard picture, and such a great experience for the senses, the feel of the air, the odours of the pine trees, lemons and oranges, that the ancients rightly called this region "felix ager", a happy land.

Naples is the regional capital. Other important cities are Caserta, Benevento, Salerno and Avellino. Campania is extraordinarily rich in remains of the classic antiquity, which can be found in Herculaneum, Pompeii, Paestum and Cuma. Amphitheaters, triumphal arches, villas, bridges and tombs of the Roman Imperial Age are numerous and remarkable. The Paleolithic art is present in Naples and Nocera, while architectural specimens of the Longobard Age can be found in Capua and Benevento. Cathedrals in the Byzantine and Arab-Norman styles are numerous and outstanding. The Royal Palace of Caserta is the most striking expression of Baroque.

Campania's cuisine relies upon local products: seafood, buffalo mozzarella, oranges and lemons. Among the food to sample are authentic Neapolitan pizza, ice cream, granita di limone (a refreshing crushed-ice lemon drink) and any (or all) of the region's gorgeous desserts. Limoncello is the alcoholic speciality, but Campania also has several good wines.

For those more interested in history and culture than in beaches, Naples offers the priceless collections in its archaeological museum, and opera performances at the prestigious Teatro San Carlo, while Pompeii, Herculaneum and Paestum are three of the world's greatest archaeological sites. The charm of Campania, however, is that you don't need to make such choices. Here you can combine superb cuisine, hours by the sea, giddying hikes, and even ballet on the beach in one sunny holiday.
